It is a well-known fact that social media is a powerful medium that can cause great upheavals around the world and a technological revolution that has helped to spread the news out of control very quickly.



As a by-product of this, fake news and misinformation have become more prevalent and have become a medium capable of influencing even the presidential election in a world power such as the United States.

For these reasons, a large number of countries around the world are turning to social media for regulation. Sri Lanka has already implemented similar measures and the Government of Sri Lanka is preparing to register social media users as the latest step in this direction.



Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukawella addressing the media today stated that there is a need to establish some form of regulation in the country to curb anomalies and abuses that take place through social media.

He further said that his ministry has made plans to register all social media users, including Facebook, with accurate information in the future. He also said that he hopes to implement this in the future.
